During an intimate family wedding in Egg Harbor, the couple crouched to hug a couple of young children and get a photo with them. After the posed photo, the couple kissed. The children's reaction was totally spontaneous, it was not set up. They reacted like this: covering their eyes, in dramatic fashion. The moment it happened, I only had time to snap one photo, and it is one of my all-time most favorite wedding images. In the old days, photographers did not capture images like this. But this is why I got into wedding photography--to get these honest, fun, sometimes emotional moments. They used to call it "photojournalistic" which I very much did not like (having been a photojournalist.) I prefer "documentary." As a wedding photographer, you need to do more than the candids of photojournalism. Yes, you need to capture these moments, but also be skilled at posing and directing. That does not happen with photojournalism where the photographer is in the background, capturing the proceedings of an event.
